Stone Cold NFL Locks Week 7

A 12-6 is far from  the "can't miss" that Stone Cold Locks
are supposed to be, so I will hunker down and try to get
back on track with my first 3-0 week, after another 2-1
last week.  Let's see if I can shake this bad luck, here goes:

1. New England - The Jets have nothing but a decent defense
and too many holes on offense.  Should be a one sided affair.

2. Buffalo - Yeah, I said it, now all I have to do is cross my
fingers and hope that Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn't throw 5 picks.
 
3. Chicago - Lions would have lost last week if they were
facing a competent opponent.  This week I'll pretend that
the Bears are just that, competent.

At Least 10 Questions The 2012 NFL Season Answer

At some point this season every team will have
questions to answer, and some will be or more
curiosity to the typical NFL fan then others.
Whether for the fact that people are curious,
or just because some folks just need a good
laugh, here are some that might come up:

1. Many predict the Patriots to go back to
the SuperBowl, but with the window for the
Brady Belichick beginning to close can that
duo really win another one?

2. Is Time Tebow just a flash in the pan or
will he expose Mark Sanchez for the sub average
QB many think he is?

3. Is CJ2k done? The last two years his yards
have taken a nosedive, is this the real Chris
Johnson?

4. Andrew Luck or RGIII? This will take years
to fully be answered, but who will have a better
1st season?

5. Does Phillip Rivers need someone besides Norv
Turner to succeed, or is it Norv Turner that needs
a better GM than A.J. Smith to finally get the job
done in San Diego?

6. Will the new Oakland Raiders look anything like
the Raida's that Al Davis envisioned in his heyday?

7. Will The Philadelphia Eagles take everything that
has happened to them of the past 12 months and parlay
that into team unity and their 1st SuperBowl Title?

8. Are the S.F. 49ers for real, and will their newest
additions help or hurt what they built last year?

9. How good will Drew Brees and the Saints be without
Sean Payton?

10. Will anyone give Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin the
credit they deserve if they don't make the playoffs
this season?

Bonus: Is Elway a genius or did he make a mistake in
getting Peyton Manning and dumping Tim Tebow?

Many more questions, but these are some of the ones

First Tim Tebow, And Now Terrell Owens

How many teams need publicity that bad that they
can't help but fall all over themselves to be part
of the next big headline grabber? There will be
those that are ready to argue that some if not all
of these moves are "good" football decisions, but
when you look at them up close it's hard to take
that very seriously.

It's been less than 24 hours since Boomer Esiason
made his feelings known and stated that the NY Jets
should cut Tim Tebow, and now the Seahawks go on
and ink a guy that should have already retired,
Terrell Owens. Though I don't necessarily agree
with Boomer that cutting Tebow is the best way to
go here, I will say that they never should have
traded for him to begin with. Cutting Tebow would
be like taking two draft picks and throwing them
in the trash. At least see if you can re-trade
him and get something back for your boneheaded
decision. Make no mistake here the Jets knew what
they were doing, they were trying to sell seats,
and that's exactly what he will do.

Now T.O. is a Seattle Seahawk, and you have to
wonder with Pete Carroll pulling the strings in
Seattle if the coaching seat is getting hot, and
he's looking for a Hail Mary to save him. Maybe
sell out a few more games, increase the local TV
ratings, and throw some interference at the owner
on the fact that he's in year three, and on his
fifth QB, and still hasn't won anything.

Though you won't catch last years conference
champion New England Patriots and N.Y. Giants
making these sorts of moves, there are still a
few teams that are ripe for this type of circus
like attention. The Jaguars were fighting the
Jets for a shot at Tebow, and if Brett Favre
came back within the next couple of years, you
can bet that someone would make a play for him.
There really is no shortage of teams that would
make a play for this circus type publicity from
time to time, just teams that wouldn't.

Holier Than Thou Boob Pat Robertson Chimes In On Tebow Trade

Religion and Politics are often subjects we are often
advised to avoid when it comes to conversations with
strangers, at parties, work, or even possibly volatile
family gatherings, but today I will take that leap,
because this is none of those and because this is such
a layup when it comes to pointing out what a hypocrite
Pat Robertson is.

In case you missed it or are wondering why I would even
broach such a lighting rod type of subject, I will fill
you in. A story on a website called "The Raw Story"
has Pat Robertson saying in so many words that it would
serve the Broncos right if Peyton Manning got injured.
Here's the quote: "OK, Peyton Manning was a tremendous
MVP quarterback, but he’s been injured. If that injury
comes back, Denver will find itself without a quarterback
— and in my opinion, it would serve them right.”
You can also see him say just that in the video clip
provided on the website. Now the headline the site ran
is a little more explicit than what he said, but since
I didn't hear him say it, I won't use it. You do have
to ask yourself though, if this is the type of comment
that we should all expect from a "Man of God"
Wishing injury, or imply that it would serve them right
if it happened? Just sayin.

NY Jets Get An Early Start On "Egg On Face" Season With Tebow Trade Debacle

It was bad enough that their fans were clearly divided
on the acquisition of Tim Tebow, and that's putting it
mildly, but then the Jets proceeded to nearly botch the
trade up all together when the made the cardinal sin of
any professional organization and they "forgot to read
the fine print", or in this case the contract altogether.

As a fan, I feel really bad for Jets fans, and wonder if
they are better or worse off than Mets fans, and if they
are fans of both, look out, it's gonna be a bad year.
The Jets clearly got egg on their face when news of them
not reading the clause in Tebow's contract to pay the
Broncos $5Mil got out, but it was a good thing that they
managed to come to an amicable solution, and meet the
Broncos half way. Truth is, Denver wasn't wrong here,
and the Jets just looked disorganized. This won't soon
be forgotten, even if Tebow does do well as a NY Jet,
but it won't hurt if this experiment works out, because
it clearly is nothing more than that for a team that is
reaching in every which direction to find some success.
Even if it means going after a polarizing figure like
Tim Tebow.

Tim Tebow To The NY Jets Bad For Tebow

Whether it was for a 1st rounder or a 99th rounder
and a bag of chips, is of no consequence here, but
the Jets did overpay for Tim Tebow. Even though he
was drafted in the 1st round by the Broncos, this
was clearly a reach by ex-coach Josh McDaniels, and
John Elway knew it. Maybe the Jets were trying to
keep him away from McDaniels who is now back as the
OC for the New England Patriots, or maybe they were
just real impressed with Tebow when he beat the snot
out of them on national TV last season, I don't know,
but either way, a 4th rounder and a sixth rounder is
way too much to pay for the rights to what is now
destined to be a bit of a circus in NY.

Whether or not this is going to help the Jets is not
really something anyone can predict with any absolute
certainty. It would be easier to predict though if
we are sure that he will only be a QB, or whether or
not he is open to playing Tight End, Wide Receiver,
or even running back. If Tebow is willing to do any
of those things, then the Jets will have a fabulous
football player on their hands, if not, then I think
they just upgrade their back up QB situation by simply
a hair, and that's only because Mark Brunell is what
is now considered "ancient" in football years.

With all that in mind, this trade is bad for Tim Tebow.
Nowhere else will he receive the type of scrutiny and
and in some ways hate that he will receive as a NY Jet.
Tebow will truly have to dig deep down inside and test
his faith for what he is about to encounter in the NYC
metropolitan area. This isn't Gainesville, FL, and it
ain't Denver Colorado, this is the BIGGEST media market
in the world, and when you poop, if you wipe awkwardly,
people know. Why the heck would anyone want that?
Repeating what I've said in the past, I don't think
Tim Tebow is a very good QB, but I do think he is a
very good human being. This wasn't his call, and he
didn't make the choice like a free agent would, but
he will have to deal with it, and unfortunately I don't
think this will make him grow as a quarterback.

Gonna guess that Brian Schottenheimer is glad he's gone.

For Peyton Manning The Broncos Must Look Past Tebow

Now that it's clear that Denver Broncos are very
serious in their pursuit of Peyton Manning it's
time they take the gloves off and stop worrying
about whether or not they hurt anyone's feelings.

The situation in Denver is quite clear, Elway is
enamored with the possibility of making Manning
the starting QB of the Broncos, but the feeling
among outsiders is that this will alienate fans
of Tim Tebow. So? If they were knowledgeable
in the first place they would be all for it, and
realize that this will only benefit Tebow, and
the Broncos long term if he really has any chance
of being a true NFL caliber QB. Elway is doing
the right thing here, these opportunities don't
present themselves everyday, and it can only
benefit both the team which is Elway's first
priority, and Tebow which could in turn benefit
the Broncos once again. Put blinders on and go
forward, this is very wise and should be pursued

In New York the media was all over this as well,
and the concern there was that though no one was
worried about ticking off any of Sanchez's fans,
it could hurt Sanchez's psyche and confidence if
the Jets pursuit of Manning had gone public and
then they fell short. Again, so? Sanchez is a
good QB, and much unlike Tim Tebow, this wasn't
a question, but he isn't a finished product as of
yet, and it's starting to show. He could clearly
have benefited sitting behind Peyton for a couple
of years(See Aaron Rodgers). Dare I say it, Pete
Carroll was right, Sanchez should have stayed at
USC one more season. At the time it sounded as
though Carroll didn't want to lose his starting
QB, and that may be true, but he was also correct
in his assessment that Sanchez needed more time
behind center on the college level. Sanchez could
easily have gotten this by watching Manning for a
couple of seasons, and might even earned a ring
along the way. Much like I wrote earlier, I still
feel the same, for the Jets this was a no-brainer,
but now you have a work in progress Mark Sanchez
to look forward to for a few more years and a new
contract extension to go with it.

Spending Valentines Day With Jeremy Lin

The title of this post may be a little misleading, BUT
it is somewhat accurate. Tonight when my wife arrives
home from a long day at work, she will have an above
average meal on the table waiting for her, as well as
fresh baked dessert, and a Valentines card to mark the
occasion. Some of the remaining details will be kept
private of course, but what I can tell you is this, one
thing that probably would not have happened about a week
ago, us watching a Knicks game together, will.

Jeremy Lin fever has gripped the country, especially NY,
and the NBA. All for a bunch of reasons that are not
all wrong or right. One of the wrong ones includes his
being linked to Tim Tebow in some way, while one of the
better ones is that he has the Knicks moving in the right
direction once again, and is giving them a huge spark
with his energy and infectious play. The comparisons to
Steve Nash are flattering of course, but unfair to both
Nash and Lin. Lin still has a huge road to travel before
he can try on those shoes.

Tonight may be Valentines day for many people around the
world, but apparently the Raptors had some help from the
magic eight ball or something when they got the idea to
make this Asian Heritage night on their schedule. The high
flying division rival Knicks will be visiting with their
very own Asian sensation and it will be a packed house at
the Air Canada Center, which is bound to make any guy that
brought his basketball loving date to this game look like
a huge hero, and bound to get a big smooch to go along
with the evening.

Make no mistake about it, I will be spending Valentines
evening with my lovely wife, but Jeremy Lin is going to be
right there for both of us to watch instead of some RomCom
movie to cheese up the evening. It may not be your idea
of romance, but love has many faces, and tonight we will
be keeping one eye on Lin-derella.

Lin, Love, And The NBA Chance To Grab Headlines

Let's face it, after the NFL season ends a great
many of us go through the lull of trying to figure
out what sports we want to follow. After Baseball
and Football, only the diehard NBA & NHL fans can
continue on with no shakes or shivers of any kind.

This week though I was able to grab three things
that made me turn my attention to the NBA.

The Lakers worked out Gilbert Arenas to see if he
was worth signing. Wow, I didn't even realize that
he wasn't playing for anyone, kinda embarrassing
on my part really.

Then I saw the story on Yahoo Sports that said
something about Kevin Love of the Timberwolves
thinking that it would be a good idea if the NBA
took MLB's idea of making the All-Star game decide
home field advantage in the Finals. Is he nuts?
Doesn't he realize that they are trying to get rid
of that stupid idea? Maybe he's taken too many
rebounds to the head.

Third but not least is of course the Jeremy Lin story
out of New York with the Knicks. I don't know much,
but I have seen him finish the last two games that they
played, they won, and he plays hard from what I can see.
None of these things are things you can argue with, BUT,
apparently every Tom, Dick, and Harry that calls in to
the sports talk radio stations in New York has already
decided that they know how this is gonna turn out when
Carmelo and Amare return to the starting lineup.
Boy was I glad to hear what they had to say, I wouldn't
want to be kept in suspense or anything, and I'm sure
they saved Carmelo and Stoudamire a boatload of time
as well. All the same though, I think I will start
watching more now, and take my chances. I'm sure the
NBA is loving this, and they don't have to spend a
bunch of advertising dollars for this feel good story
that even has a crazy connection to Tim Tebow.
You can't beat that!

Jeremy Lin, Tim Tebow Comparisons Way Off Base

The sampling is way to small, and four games out of
about 66 are equal to only about 6% of the season
this year, but I already think that Jeremy Lin will
be a more established NBA player than Tim Tebow will
be an NFL player. So what?, and why compare the two?
Just because Lin said that he admired Tebow, and has
been a bit of an instant success, who may or may not
be a bit of a Jesus fan? Again, so what?

Everyone is looking for a link, Rich Cimini of ESPN NY
@RichCimini tweeted, "Year of The Undrafted Free Agent
in New York: Victor Cruz and Jeremy Lin.", Uh Cruz won
a Super Bowl the Knicks are under .500. Lin seems to
be a little bit of a Bible thumper, so he immediately
has to be compared to Tim Tebow? Well the stats don't
support that. In his last four games, the brunt of
this "Lin-sanity", Lin is averaging 28.5 PPG, 8 Assts,
and the Knicks are 4-0, and only three of those games
are starts. Those three stats alone dwarf anything
Tim Tebow did as an individual, even though it's true,
his team did win. All that said with that kind of
success and attention, there will come the hate too.
After the game Andrew Bynum said: "Today we just added
to his hype and probably kept him in the league for 10
years", hmmm, a little envy maybe?

I saw his post game interview after the Knicks, Laker
game at MSG, and at no time did he mention Jesus, Thank
God, or anything like that, but he did mention teammates,
and point out individuals. The only comparison I see so
far is that they are athletes, weren't expected to do
anything of any significance, and win. Not a bad combo.
