Yankees Scour For Pitching, A.J. Burnett 14-4

AP Photo/Keith Srakocic

With the Yankees leading the AL East by 5 1/2 games,
and a record that is 21 games over .500 it's tough
to find anyone to feel sorry for them, and yet their
situation could be a bit precarious. Today they
signed Derek Lowe off the scrap heap as they brace
for another DL stint from ace C.C. Sabathia, and
a shaky rotation to fill in for him.

Phil Hughes at 11-10 makes them nervous, Ivan Nova
has a better mark at 11-6 but a worse era at 4.70
and has been shaky recently, and to count on anything
from Andy Petitte isn't very wise at this juncture.
Derek Lowe started out the season like gang busters
while he was with Cleveland with a 6-1 record and a
stingy era, but has fallen off a cliff and the Yankees
hope they can catch him and his 8-10 record & 5.52 era.

All that brings me to A.J. Burnett who the Yankees
traded to the Pirates in the off season and are still
paying more than half his salary. With his 14-4 mark
and a 3.32 era, I can assure you New York Yankee fans
are wondering why he couldn't do this when he was in
New York. That question may never truly be answered
fully, but armchair quarterbacks everywhere will
always speculate, and I do wonder if Brian Cashman
wished he had that one back. I just wonder.

A.J. Burnett's Re-Emergence, May Be Ed Whitson Syndrome

Courtesy ESPN

The Pittsburgh Pirates are finally getting some
attention again. Clint Hurdle has done a great
job making them relevant again, last year they
added at the trade deadline instead of subtracting
for a change and though Yankee fans would like to
think that their franchise is the only franchise
with any history, the Pirates were once a proud
and storied franchise as well.

Then comes along a trade this off season for both
of these organizations that couldn't have been a
better fit, the Yankees get rid of an albatross
that they clearly overpaid in A.J. Burnett, and
the Pirates get an ace at a discount. This may
sound contradictory, but it isn't. The Pirates
don't have the payroll the Yankees have, they may
never have it. The Yankees can outspend anyone,
but they can't afford to keep this kind of DEAD
money, and negative energy around. Their you have
it, the perfect trade. The Yankees paid about 85%
of his salary and Pirates have their ace.

You see, it seems that A.J. Burnett may have come
down with Ed Whitson syndrome while in NY. The
signs weren't as blatant and obvious as they were
with Whitson, but now that A.J. is a Pirate, they
are a bit clearer to see. Burnett is 8-2 with a
3.24 ERA, and if it wasn't for one major blowout
in which he was left in too long and allowed twelve
runs over 2 2/3 innings against the Cardinals in
his second start of the season, his Era is a tiny
1.87. Though many will argue that he pitches in
the NL and there is no DH, he got a 4-1 victory vs
Detroit last night, and upped his record against.
the American League to 4-0 this year with a 2.08
Era, two of those are in the AL ballpark and his
ERA there is still an impressive 2.84. I could
throw numbers at you all day, and if I try hard
enough, I can make them all work in my favor, but
I will leave you with one last one which is truly
and Ed Whitson syndrome supporter; A.J. Burnett's
career W-L numbers are 129-113, but as a Yankee he
was 34-35, and this is a team that won close to 95
games every year. Just in case you think this is
only an AL thing, well he was 38-26 with the Blue
Jays and they never won anything in his time there.

The Ed Whitson legend in NY is a little exaggerated,
but so are so many things in NY. His record as a
Yankee was actually a winning one, 15-10, but a 5.38
Era and an inability to pitch at Yankee stadium along
with constant scrutiny from George Steinbrenner and
Yankee fans, made it impossible for him to ever win
the hearts and minds of anyone there. He also had a
better record in the AL, 19-12, than he did in the NL,
107-111, but the legend lives on in NY, and though
the syndrome may not be medically recognized, it does
indeed exist.

A.J. Burnett Goes From Trash To Treasure In Pittsburgh

(AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Nathan Denette)

Though I am not really sure who said it, it's something
that we have all heard before: "One Mans Trash Is Another
Man's Treasure", and that is exactly the case for the New
York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates when it comes to
the trade of A.J. Burnett this past weekend.

N.Y. Yankee fans couldn't be happier as a whole to get
A.J. Burnett out of town, and many volunteered to drive
him to wherever he was going as a bonus to it all.
A.J. Had clearly worn out his welcome after having been
so underwhelming with a 34-35 record with a 4.79 ERA in
his three seasons with the Yankees. It's certainly not
what the fans or the Yankees were expecting after they
signed him to a 5 year deal for $82.5Mil in 2009.
The Yankees did win a World Series in that time, but the
numbers were enough to send most of them into therapy,
and that was unacceptable in that part of N.Y. Baseball.

Then comes the the part where A.J. is welcomed with open
arms and seen as "Treasure", and not "Trash" by the
Pittsburgh Pirates and most of their fans. Of course the
Pirates haven't won a World Series since 1979, are trying
to avoid a 20th consecutive losing season, and the Yankees
are willing to pay sixty percent of Burnett's remaining
$33Mil salary in order for the Pirates to take him off
their hands. There is no question that A.J. Burnett will
be an instant improvement to a Pirates team that had it's
moments last season, but wasn't able to retain any of it's
early season scucess. It's also likely that he will be
the instant ace for Clint Hurdle, but it does show how
clear that perception is everything.

This makes both fan bases happier if not necessarily elated,
and is truly likely to improve both teams. What else can
one ask for? It's not likely to hurt Burnett's career much
either, as has been noted many times, a change of scenery
is good, and maybe he can pull a Lin.

AJ Burnett Will Be NY Yankees Demise

For those of you expecting anything different,
wake up. This isn't going to be a different
version of the bloody sock. It won't endear
Burnett to Yankees fans, and even though he
won't do it, he should definitely consider
what his life OUTSIDE of baseball will be like.

Burnett may get saved tonight if the Tigers
pitcher manages to throw a worse game than him,
but his time in New York has a shorter shelf
life than listeria laced lettuce. There is
practically no way manager Joe Girardi can pull
Burnett fast enough if the pitcher gets himself
into trouble, which he inevitably will, without
either embarrassing Burnett or some sort of
outcry by the fan base, ownership or critics in
some way. AJ Burnett is without question a
skilled and talented pitcher, but these skills
are no longer the question, and never were.
It's all mental, it's all mental stupid.

Apocolypse Follow Up

Nathan Denette/Associated Press

This latest story is worth following up,
because since it was posted more signs have
appeared. Last night Alaska was struck by
a pretty powerful earthquake (7.1), which
was followed by a Tsunami warning.
New Orleans is preparing once again for
some pretty serious flooding, and to make
matters even scarier, Burnett actually
got the win in last nights game prompting
club officials to once again consider him
for a playoff start. Unreal !

Could An Apocolypse Be Upon Us?

Such signs as earthquakes, aftershocks, and
historical hurricanes are one thing, but
tonight in Boston something really odd took
place that hasn't happened with much frequency
in recent times. AJ Burnett kept the NY
Yankees in a game, and not only did he keep
them in it, but he didn't need a 17-1 lead
to accomplish it. Burnett threw five and a
third innings where he only gave up 2 walks,
1 home run, and two runs, earned or otherwise.
That's a 3.37 in game era for those of you
keeping score at home. Not a believer?
He could still get the win! OMG we're doomed!
