Appropriate Fines

So Bill Belicheck gets fined $500,000 and the New
England Patriots $250,000 for their part in Spy-Gate.
Do you think that's enough? Well consider this, and
I won't get into the finite details, but in F1
(Formula One) the Maclaren Mercedes team was
fined the points for the entire 2007 season, but their
drivers won't be affected, they had no direct part in this,
and $100,000,000. Yes One Hundred Million Dollars,
as well as the fact that F1 must inspect every aspect
of their 2008 model to ensure that none of Ferrari's
secrets, they team they cheated against, will be
implemented in their new car. Do you think that's
too much?

I say no to the first, because even if he wasn't able
to use it the film info in real time, he knew the rules,
and still he cheated. Yes to the second, but would
certainly like to know what kind of money floats in
those circles that they can levy such a hefty fine.

It makes little sense, but it rarely does.

Congratulations on your new blog, Some clarifications:The drivers at Mclaren were involved in the cheating but were given amnsety by the FIA for submitting testimony pertinent to the case. As far as the fine goes, an annual operating budget for a big F1 team like Mclaren is betwwen $5-700 Million, so $100 is painful but not crippling.

You can find the full text of the decison here:

including details of emails between drivers detailing their usage of known Ferrari confidential tactics and technical details. How the drivers can get off so cleanly from all of this I'll never know. A driver championship for either Alonso or Hamilton is tainted, as they did it driving a car that was developed knowing what their main rival was doing, an advantage no other team had.

The question I have on both accounts is where does that obscene amount of money go? The league... charity... $100 million could do a lot of good in the world. Is this country missing something with F1? That number is staggering.

Gio left some very interesting follow up info for those of you
that would like follow up info
on the F1 cheating/spy scandal
and a link to the complete details.

Thanks Gio

JPA wanted to know where that fine
money goes. Well JPA I can't speak
for how F1 handles that, but in
the major US sports it's been a
tradition of sorts to make sure
it goes to some type of charitable
cause or another, I hope F1 does,
because as you stated it could do
a world of good.

Thanks JPA
